CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is an advanced CAD/CAM (computer assisted) dental technology for ceramic restorations such as fillings, crowns, onlays, and veneers. Dentists use CEREC in their own offices after receiving special training on the technological procedures necessary to create accurate restorations chairside.
Traditional restorations are made from a variety of materials. Typically, fillings are made from composite (plastic) and crowns are a blend of metal and porcelain or all porcelain. Traditional restorations require the expertise of a dental laboratory to create restorations such as crowns, veneers, and onlays. An impression is made of your teeth at the dental office and sent to the dental lab with your unique shade. Restorations are returned between 1-3 weeks from the dental lab and you will have a follow up appointment to have your permanent restoration placed.
In the hands of a skilled dentist, both traditional and CEREC restorations are excellent options for restoring the health of your teeth. Because CEREC uses computer assisted technology to ensure a perfect fit, it may eliminate some of the room for error when it comes to dental restorations. The main difference between traditional restorations and CEREC restorations is the wait time necessary for procedures to be completed. CEREC technology cuts that time tremendously.
